Coronary Angiography

Procedure that uses a special dye (contrast material) and x-rays to see how blood flows through the arteries in your heart.

Coronary angiography can be used to help diagnose heart conditions, help plan future treatments and carry out certain procedures.

For example, it may be used:

  • After a heart attack
  • To help diagnose angina – where pain in the chest is caused by restricted blood supply to the heart
  • To plan interventional or surgical procedures

It is also considered to be the best method of diagnosing coronary heart disease, where a build-up of fatty substances in the coronary arteries affects the heart’s blood supply.

Procedure used to open blocked coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease. It restores blood flow to the heart muscle without open-heart surgery.

Angioplasty (also called percutaneous coronary intervention – PCI) can be done in an emergency setting such as a heart attack.

It is one of the most common types of treatment for the heart. As the procedure doesn’t involve making major incisions in the body, doctors refer to this as a minimally invasive form of treatment.

Small electrical device that’s implanted in the chest or abdomen, used to treat some arrhythmias. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm.

Pacemakers send electrical pulses to help your heart beat at a normal rate and rhythm.

The procedure to implant a pacemaker is considered minor surgery. It can usually be done using local anesthesia.
