Stroke

What is it?

It occurs when an artery that carries blood to the brain becomes blocked.

How does it happen?

It can be caused by a narrowed blood vessel, bleeding, or a clot that blocks blood flow.

Epilepsy

What is it?

Chronic brain disorder in which groups of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes send the wrong signals and cause seizures.

How does it happen?

It may occur as a result of a genetic disorder or an acquired brain injury, such as a trauma or stroke.

Common triggers:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress
  • Alcohol
  • Not taking prescribed anti-seizure medication (ASM)

Traumatic Brain Injury

What is it?

Damage to the brain caused by an external force. TBIs can range from mild to severe, and can cause temporary or permanent problems.

How does it happen

It often occurs as a result of a severe sports injury, car accident, fall or being struck by an object.

Signs & symptoms of TBI:

  • Headache
  • Convulsions or seizures
  • Blurred or double vision.
  • Unequal eye pupil size or dilation
  • Clear fluids draining from the nose or ears
  • Nausea and vomiting

What is Hydrocephalus?

Condition where cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain, causing pressure to increase. It’s also known as “water on the brain”.

Symptoms:
Headaches ~ Double vision
Enlarged head ~ Behavioral changes
Sleepiness ~ Nausea or vomiting
Balance problems ~ Poor coordination
Loss of bladder control

How is Neurocysticercosis spread?

By consuming food or water contaminated with tapeworm eggs.
It can also spread through direct contact with human feces.
Poor hygiene practices can also lead to infection.

Symptoms:

  • Seizures ~ Epilepsy ~ Intracranial hypertension
  • Psychiatric complaints, such as poor cognitive performance or dementia
  • Ophthalmologic and endocrinological manifestations

What causes Neuropathic pain?

Disease ~ Multiple sclerosis, diabetes, shingles, HIV/AIDS, alcohol use disorder, cancer, multiple myeloma
Injury ~ Back, leg, and hip problems, herniated discs, spinal cord compression
Surgery ~ Breast removal (mastectomy) or lung surgery (thoracotomy)
Infection ~ Shingles, syphilis
Loss of limb ~ Phantom limb syndrome
