Periodontics is the area of Dentistry that deals with the tissues that protect, surround and support the teeth: gums, bone, periodontal ligament and root cement.

Periodontal care is required when there is inflammation and redness of the gums accompanied by loss of the bone that supports the teeth (known as periodontal disease). The main objective of this branch of dentistry is to prevent the progression of said disease to prevent tooth loss.

A periodontal consultation consists of dental cleanings, curettage, scaling and root planing when advanced periodontitis occurs. In minor cases such as gingivitis, treatment is limited to regular dental cleaning, as well as improving the brushing technique.

What diseases does Periodontics treat?

Periodontal lesions are caused by the accumulation of bacteria, which cause alterations in the dental support tissues. If they are not treated, these ailments progress progressively, and can cause tooth loss and various conditions in our body. The 2 main periodontal diseases are:

Gingivitis: This is the initial phase of periodontal disease, which is caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque. If it is not removed correctly, it turns into tartar, which irritates and inflames the gums. The most common symptoms are redness in the area and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is a reversible condition, but if not treated properly, it can progress to periodontitis.

Periodontitis: It is a serious and irreversible periodontal disease. This pathology, unlike gingivitis, is characterized by the structural loss of the attachment apparatus. Periodontitis is the main reason for dental loss in adults.

Take into account…

Brushing your teeth consistently after each meal will help reduce the chances of periodontal disease. Remember, if you notice bleeding when brushing or eating, you have a bad mouth odor or even notice separation in your teeth, it may be one of these diseases and you need to visit your dentist as soon as possible to avoid progress.

Tooth Whitening is an aesthetic process of teeth whitening by removing stains or changing the color of the teeth.

This procedure is used specifically in aesthetic cases where the color of the teeth is overshadowed by external factors that stain the teeth. Therefore, it serves to perfect dental aesthetics, improving the color of the teeth to whiter tones.

How it is performed?

To carry out this procedure, Hydrogen Peroxide gel is used as the main bleaching agent.

There are 2 types of whitening:

  • The one carried out in the office: it is a method that is carried out in the dental office, where the handling is totally by the specialist and can last approximately 45 minutes. Therefore, it is better controlled and the results are shown instantly.
  • The one carried out at home or remotely: this method is slower, since it is mainly carried out by the same patient and requires weeks to start seeing results. In this case, the patient is sent guards and a whitening kit with application instructions, although a control visit will also be necessary to see the progress.

In this way, the dentist will be in charge of carrying out a preliminary assessment and will decide if the patient is a candidate for treatment. Since, not in all cases it is necessary.

Benefits, disadvantages and risks

The main benefit of teeth whitening is the removal of stains on the teeth. While its main disadvantage is that the treatment cannot be abused, since the greatest risk is causing irreversible damage to the teeth if misused.

Therefore, tooth whitening is a process of extreme care when performing it due to the use of Hydrogen Peroxide, as the main agent, and therefore it must be carried out under the care of a specialist.

How often should it be done?

This dental procedure must be performed at an interval of 5 years, to avoid damage to the teeth or cause hypersensitivity.

In addition, it is important to go to a specialist every 6 months for a check-up and dental cleaning, which will help you always maintain a healthy mouth and avoid major complications.
