Physical Therapy vs Joint Replacement

THE BEST SURGERY IS THE ONE THAT IS NOT PERFORMED

Joint degeneration is one of the most common causes of disability and functional limitation in athletes and the elderly. Faced with joint deterioration, conventional medical management offers only anti-inflammatory drugs.

  • Physical therapy offers pain relief and improves functionality without regenerating deteriorated joints.

Joint replacement is the last resort for joint deterioration; high cost, surgical risks and half-life of the joint no longer than 15 years. Also without the opportunity of a new joint replacement at the end of them.

  • Articular cartilage nutrition and lifestyle changes can give an opportunity to improve joint symptoms avoiding surgery.

There are techniques that stimulate joint regeneration by promoting the migration of stem cells to the injury site, which will be in charge of carrying out this reconstruction of the articular cartilage.

What is PRP?

PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma

It is the application by infiltration of platelet-rich plasma, which causes ligaments, tendons, cartilage and muscles to undergo a process that allows the regeneration of these tissues.

It can be applied to those joints that present pain when subjected to tension due to forces or weight unloading, locating the points of pain, achieving a guided and controlled procedure that allows tissue regeneration in a natural way and very different from anti-inflammatories.

It is an outpatient procedure in which plasma and platelets are obtained from the patient and infiltrated into joint spaces to promote the regeneration of articular cartilage. It promotes the migration of stem cells that participate in the regeneration of articular cartilage.

As it is the patient’s own plasma, there is no possibility of allergic reactions as can happen with synthetic products made, such as sodium hyaluronate obtained from Streptococcus zooepidemicus through fermentation processes.

With proper technique the procedure has little risk.

When Is PRP Applied?

Joint problems can include tendon and ligament injuries, injury to intra-articular tissues such as articular cartilage, among others. Comprehensive therapy includes intra-articular and extra-articular pain control, favoring the recovery process and contributing to joint regeneration.

This therapy also includes the strengthening of muscle groups that contribute to joint stability and body weight control, offering impact-free therapeutic exercise programs that strengthen and improve joint stability, while maintaining body weight and acquiring healthy habits to maintain these results.

  • The most common joints to present deterioration and which can be helped with this method are: knee, hip, ankle, shoulder and elbow mainly.
  • The lumbar region can be addressed by adding manual therapy, reverse traction, and conventional physical therapy.

Is the treatment expensive?

Joint replacement is a high-cost surgical method, as well as a slow recovery, possible sequelae, and an average durability of 15 years.

The application of sodium hyaluronate and intra-articular collagen are not as expensive as the previous one, but there is the possibility of allergies to synthetic products due to the use of bacteria and fermentation to obtain them.

The application of Plasma Rich in Platelets is less expensive, since the patient’s plasma is used, only the procedure has a cost, without risks of allergies since it is the plasma and platelets of the same patient, with good results with application of 4 sessions, one every 2 weeks, plus physical therapy treatment, which makes significant changes in joint regeneration in 2 months of treatment.

What other benefits do I get?

  • The conventional physical therapy treatment protocol aimed at strengthening muscle groups to improve joint stability.
  • Physical activation program using muscles and joints without damage to promote healthy habits and caloric expenditure to control body weight.
  • Nutritional orientation and activities in therapeutic tank, free of impact.
